Jumping the waves at Torrey Pines State Beach is a favorite activity that my nephew Daniel and I do together. After I’d been clobbered by a few waves one afternoon, we started talking about how waves were a good metaphor for life. Resist the waves and they get you. Go with them and sometimes you still get clobbered, but mostly, it’s just pure fun. This is a terrific workout, warm-up song; gets your heart beating. Good times!

LYRICS
The tide goes out, the tide comes in
Emotions flare, then calm again
I try to swim the best I can
But sometimes start to twist and spin
CHORUS:
Life is like the ocean in motion
Moving up on the shore
Can’t control the waves or the current
Impossible to ignore
Life is like the ocean in motion
Tide rushing in and out
Might as well stop trying to fight it
And be in the here and now
It seems unfair, it makes me mad
I can’t control the circumstance
But like the waves that meet the rocks
I flow around the stumbling blocks
CHORUS
BRIDGE:
And though the moon controls the tide
The tide does not resist
It’s not sad; it doesn’t get mad
It just finds a way to persist
CHORUS
