Why Do I Do It?

Too often, we “ordinary” 9-5’ers trivialize the work we do, forgetting the contributions we provide with our efforts.  Society often perpetuates our feelings of smallness by glorifying a notion of wealth based on “the mighty dollar.”  This songs reminds me my work is meaningful, no matter how trivial it may seem in the moment.   It is dedicated to those of us who, well, you’ll know yourself when you hear the song.

LYRICS

I get up in the morning
Draggin’ my body to the office
I wake up as I get down my first hot cup
I sort through the piles
Email, vmail, and the hundred things on my to-do list
But before I get started I remind myself again

CHORUS:
   Why do I do it?
   Because it matters
I do it because I care
   Why do I do it
   And even take to it?
Cause I make a difference there

I get so focused
On trying to hit some all-important deadline
I’ve got to watch when it looks as if it won’t go my way
When pressing for results
I have to keep in mind
It’s a person on that phone line
I work for everyone to win
As I remind myself again, yeah

CHORUS

BRIDGE:
   It’s easy to get critical
And think the job is trivial
   But look at what’s achievable
Only when we’re working together, oh!
